He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you.

January Devotional – The God Who Goes Before You
Deuteronomy 31:8 ESV
Scripture
“It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.” —Deuteronomy 31:8 (ESV)
Reflection
Life is often defined by transitions—new jobs, moving to a new city, or navigating a difficult season of loss. In this passage, Joshua was facing the ultimate transition: taking over leadership from Moses and leading the Israelites into the unknown territory of the Promised Land. The weight of the future likely felt overwhelming.
Yet, Moses offers Joshua a promise that remains our anchor today. Notice the order of God’s presence:
- He goes before you: God is already in your “tomorrow.” He is scouting the path, preparing the way, and arranging the details of your future before you even arrive.
- He is with you: While He is ahead of you, He is also right beside you. You are never walking into a challenge solo; His unfailing companionship is a constant reality.
- He will not leave you: People may walk away, and circumstances may change, but God’s commitment to you is permanent and unwavering.
Because of these truths, the command is clear: Do not fear. Fear and dismay are natural reactions to the unknown, but they lose their power when we realize that the Unknown is fully known by our Creator. Today, whatever “Promised Land” or “wilderness” you are stepping into, remember that you aren’t the one clearing the path—He is.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for going before me and for being with me in every moment. Help me to surrender my anxiety about the future and trust in Your active presence. When I feel weak or uncertain, strengthen my faith to believe that You will never leave or forsake me. Amen.
May this devotional inspire you to deepen your walk with Christ and to answer His call with a willing heart.
