“Teach me your way, O Lord, that I may walk in your truth; unite my heart to fear your name. I give thanks to you, O Lord my God, with my whole heart, and I will glorify your name forever.” — Psalm 86:11-12 (ESV)

Devotional Reflection

In the noise of modern life, our hearts are often pulled in a thousand different directions. We worry about our finances, we stress over our schedules, and we chase after temporary satisfactions. Our focus becomes fragmented, and our spiritual life often feels like just one more plate we are trying to keep spinning. This is why the psalmist’s plea is so profound: “Unite my heart.”

To have a “united heart” is to have a singular focus. It is the opposite of being double-minded or lukewarm. It is a heart that isn’t divided between the world and the Kingdom, but one that finds its center in the “fear of the Lord”—a reverent, awe-filled love for God that informs every decision. When God teaches us His way, it isn’t just about gaining information; it’s about transformation that allows us to walk in His truth with steady steps.

Notice the result of this internal unity: “I give thanks to you… with my whole heart.” Genuine worship and gratitude flow most freely when we aren’t holding anything back. When our heart is made whole and focused on Him, our praise becomes more vibrant, and our desire to glorify His name extends beyond a Sunday morning and into “forever.”

A Prayer for Today

Lord, I confess that my heart is often scattered. I get distracted by things that don’t matter and lose sight of Your truth. Today, I ask that You would teach me Your way. Show me how to walk in step with Your Spirit. Most of all, Lord, unite my heart. Pull the scattered pieces of my affections together and center them on You. May my life be a song of thanksgiving that glorifies Your name, both now and forevermore. Amen.
