Create in me a clean heart, O God,
and renew a right spirit within me.
Cast me not away from your presence,
and take not your Holy Spirit from me.
Restore to me the joy of your salvation,
and uphold me with a willing spirit
(PSALM 51:10-12 Esv).
We can’t just scrape sin off the surface of our heart or apply a home remedy. It takes a heart remedy. I takes radical surgery like a spiritual heart transplant. It really takes a miracle. That word for “create” is the same word used in Genesis to describe the creation of the world. It means to “create something out of nothing.” It is a miracle that only God can perform.
Το get a pure heart, we need a new heart, a complete spiritual overhaul. When our problem is sin, we can’t just deal with what we do; we have to deal with what we are. And the only thing that can accomplish this kind of renewal—the kind that changes us from the inside out–is God’s grace. It is grace that makes all things new.
52 Weeks Through the Psalms
A Christian’s worst nightmare is that God would cast us way from his presence or take his Holy Spirit from us. Thank God, that won’t happen. He has sealed us with his Holy Spirit and we are his. He will not cast away from his presence those who belong to him. We can awake from such a nightmare with relief and gratitude. We can ask him for a clean heart, handcrafted by God himself. We can also request a restoration of the joy of our salvation—the greatest joy we can experience. For this we praise him and are confident that he will always uphold us with a willing spirit. Let us give thanks for his willingness and ability to give us the overhaul we need.
