Children of God

  • Foundation and Emphasis of whole passage
  • See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.”1 John 3:1
  • Not everyone is a child of God-Those who relate to him by faith.
  • John 3-Jesus and Nicodemus-Must be born again.
    • Supernatural act that happens in order to allow someone to see and understand who Christ is. Christ’s initiative.
      • We’re not superior to anyone! Humility.
    • Spiritual birth gives us a new nature and ability to reflect our heavenly Father (Tekna word means to reflect the nature and likeness of.) Word appears 9 more times in
      • We naturally are children of darkness-Orphans.
        • John 1:12-13- “12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, 13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.”
        • Romans 8:15-16, “’For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, ‘Abba, Father.’ The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.
        • Galatians 3:26 ‘You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.”
    • This shows the amazing love of God-“What kind of love”. What country, place, origin (Potepen)- Greek Seaport travelers arriving-From where have you come?
      • “Behold the amazing gift of love The Father hath bestowed, On us the sinful sons of men, To call us sons of God!” (Isaac Watts)
        • Old man still moved with passion by the love of God.

Text

28 And now, little children, abide in him, so that when he appears we may have confidence and not shrink from him in shame at his coming. 29 If you know that he is righteous, you may be sure that everyone who practices righteousness has been born of him.

See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears[a] we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.

Big Idea

In love, God has made us His children. Our lives are forever changed by our heavenly birth.

Outline

Instills Confidence (28-29)-Gives us a New Home (1)-Grants us a Hope that purifies us (2-3)

Instills Confidence (28-29)

  • Ever had an unexpected visitor or event? Pop-Quiz/Test, Visitor stopping by the house, Employer stop by unannounced.
    • Undercover Boss- Moe’s…..the revealing of the undercover boss.
  • 2 Reactions: Shrinking or Confidence
    • Shrinking=Ashamed, Dishonoring, Disappointment
    • Confidence=Openness, Boldness, frank conversation
      • 1 Cor. 3:10-15 According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and someone else is building upon it. Let each one take care how he builds upon it. For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw— each one’s work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. If the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. If anyone’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire
        • Possible for believers to shrink at his coming (All unbelievers will shrink) but John is seeking to promote active faithfulness to please Christ.
  • Being a child of God
    • We must abide in Him: Actively remain. Continue to place faith. Persevere in the faith.
    • Practice righteousness. We aren’t saved because we’re righteous, but our new birth creates this desire and hunger.

Gives us a New Home (1)

  • Have you ever felt rejected? Not at home? Outcast?
    • When I moved when I was younger, truly felt like I wasn’t at home. It wasn’t where I belonged.
  • Christ was rejected by the world and so will those who follow Him.
    • Sometimes loss of friendship/ family
      • Speaking behind your back
    • People disagreeing with you
    • Outright anger and hatred of.
  • John 15:18-21 “If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. Remember the word that I said to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours. But all these things they will do to you on account of my name, because they do not know him who sent me
  • Phil. 3:20-21 “But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.
    • We have a better home awaiting us.

Grants us a Hope that Purifies us (2-3)

  • We are motivated and changed by what we hope for
    • Jobs-Marriage-Children-Home.
      • What we hope for directs our actions in the present.
  • What we cast our vision on directs what we hope for in the future!
    • Me: Watch a movie and inspired and want to start doing those things-directs what my hopes become for the future (Book-Swiss Robinson). What you fix your attention and energy on in the present affects what your hope of the future will be.
  • 2 Corinthians 3:18-“ And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.
    • Born again, we see the Lord. Begin to get His beauty, worth, value….We want to become like Him. Our gazing upon Christ in the present drives our hope to be like Christ in the future.
    • Our Hope to be like Christ in the future drives our pursuit of Him in the present.
      • They FEED one another!!!
  • 1 Cor. 13:9-12 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away. When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways. For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.
    • My knowledge of that life is small, The eye of faith is dim; But ’tis enough that Christ knows all, And I shall be like Him!—Richard Baxter

Harriett Buell

My Father is rich in houses and lands; He holdeth the wealth of the world in His hands! Of rubies and diamonds, of silver and gold, His coffers are full—He has riches untold.

My Father’s own Son, the Savior of men, Once wandered o’er earth as the poorest of them; But now He is reigning forever on high, And will give me a home in heav’n by and by.

I once was an outcast stranger on earth, A sinner by choice and an alien by birth; But I’ve been adopted; my name’s written down— An heir to a mansion, a robe, and a crown.

A tent or a cottage, why should I care? They’re building a palace for me over there! Though exiled from home, yet still I may sing: All glory to God, I’m a child of the King.
