Don’t Waste Your Life – Luke 19:11-27 ESV, Colin Munroe, Lead Pastor

Don’t waste your life

Luke 19:11-27 ESV
As they heard these things, he proceeded to tell a parable, because he was near to Jerusalem, and because they supposed that the kingdom of God was to appear immediately. 12 He said therefore, “A nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom and then return. 13 Calling ten of his servants, he gave them ten minas, and said to them, ‘Engage in business until I come.’ 14 But his citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We do not want this man to reign over us.’ 15 When he returned, having received the kingdom, he ordered these servants to whom he had given the money to be called to him, that he might know what they had gained by doing business. 16 The first came before him, saying, ‘Lord, your mina has made ten minas more.’ 17 And he said to him, ‘Well done, good servant! Because you have been faithful in a very little, you shall have authority over ten cities.’ 18 And the second came, saying, ‘Lord, your mina has made five minas.’ 19 And he said to him, ‘And you are to be over five cities.’ 20 Then another came, saying, ‘Lord, here is your mina, which I kept laid away in a handkerchief; 21 for I was afraid of you, because you are a severe man. You take what you did not deposit, and reap what you did not sow.’ 22 He said to him, ‘I will condemn you with your own words, you wicked servant! You knew that I was a severe man, taking what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow? 23 Why then did you not put my money in the bank, and at my coming I might have collected it with interest?’ 24 And he said to those who stood by, ‘Take the mina from him, and give it to the one who has the ten minas.’ 25 And they said to him, ‘Lord, he has ten minas!’ 26 ‘I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. 27 But as for these enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and slaughter them before me.’”

  • Let’s remember the context here.
    • Jesus reveals His destiny for the 3rd time.

Luke 18:31-34 ESV
And taking the twelve, he said to them, “See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and everything that is written about the Son of Man by the prophets will be accomplished. 32 For he will be delivered over to the Gentiles and will be mocked and shamefully treated and spit upon. 33 And after flogging him, they will kill him, and on the third day he will rise.” 34 But they understood none of these things. This saying was hidden from them, and they did not grasp what was said.

  • Jesus heals a blind beggar.
  • Jesus invites himself to Zacchaeus’ house.

Luke 19:8-10 ESV
And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor. And if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it fourfold.” 9 And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”

Luke 19:11 ESV
As they heard these things, he proceeded to tell a parable, because he was near to Jerusalem, and because they supposed that the kingdom of God was to appear immediately.

  • The next event was His triumphant entry.
  • How should we live knowing our King is coming?
  • What are you doing to prepare for His return?
  • Does how we steward our time & resources matter?
  • Are you investing in eternity?

Luke 19:12 ESV

He said therefore, “A nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom and then return.

  • Jesus is describing His future.
  • God the Father will put everything under His feet.
  • He is currently seated with the Father.
  • Our King and His Kingdom are coming.

Luke 19:13 ESV

Calling ten of his servants, he gave them ten minas, and said to them, ‘Engage in business until I come.’

  • It is interesting that He uses the number 10.
  • He called them.
  • Notice he gave the servants one each.
  • They were his servants.
  • What is a mina?
  • What is he asking them to do?

Luke 19:14 ESV

But his citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We do not want this man to reign over us.’

  • Who are these citizens?
  • He knew every future detail.
  • Have you embraced Him as King?
  • Are you His servant entrusted with His resources?
    • His Word
    • His mission
    • His Spirit
    • His mind and heart
    • Time, talent and money.

Luke 19:15 ESV

When he returned, having received the kingdom, he ordered these servants to whom he had given the money to be called to him, that he might know what they had gained by doing business.

  • How are you spending your life and His resources?
  • He has told us in advance that this will happen.
  • We have been given kingdom currency!
  • The expectation is that we will invest it for increase.
  • How are we to use what God has given us?
    • To relieve the debts of others.
    • To build relational equity.
    • Justice for the poor.
    • To demonstrate His love and provision.
    • To Invest in the mission.
    • To love the saints.
    • To invest in His Kingdom.

Luke 19:16-19 ESV

The first came before him, saying, ‘Lord, your mina has made ten minas more.’ 17 And he said to him, ‘Well done, good servant! Because you have been faithful in a very little, you shall have authority over ten cities.’ 18 And the second came, saying, ‘Lord, your mina has made five minas.’ 19 And he said to him, ‘And you are to be over five cities.’

  • This is our ideal motivation to serve.
  • Are you being faithful with God’s gifts?
  • There are eternal rewards!
  • We are developing our eternal resume.
  • Ultimately we will cast our crowns at His feet.

Luke 19:20-21 ESV

Then another came, saying, ‘Lord, here is your mina, which I kept laid away in a handkerchief; 21 for I was afraid of you, because you are a severe man. You take what you did not deposit, and reap what you did not sow.’

  • He was motivated by fear rather than faith.
  • He probably didn’t think he was coming back.
  • Do you believe He is coming back?
  • The main problem was he did not know his master.
  • Are you laying away God’s gifts?
  • Our coming King wants to reward you!
  • But if we don’t know Him and love Him we will not honor Him with His gifts and be condemned by our own words and actions.

Luke 19:22 ESV

He said to him, ‘I will condemn you with your own words, you wicked servant! You knew that I was a severe man, taking what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow?

  • What made this servant “wicked”?
    • What he thought he knew!
  • Do you know Him? Really know Him?
  • There are so many miss conceptions about God!
  • Yet He has revealed Himself to us.
    • Creation / His Word / Testimony
    • His Son and Spirit

Luke 19:23 ESV

Why then did you not put my money in the bank, and at my coming I might have collected it with interest?’

  • Who gets the benefit of our investments?
  • Are you investing what God has given you?
  • This is where our faith gets really practical!

Luke 19:24-26 ESV

And he said to those who stood by, ‘Take the mina from him, and give it to the one who has the ten minas.’ 25 And they said to him, ‘Lord, he has ten minas!’ 26 ‘I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.

  • The Kingdom’s economy is different!
  • Faithfulness is marked with abundance.
  • Squandering our gifts leads to eternal poverty!
  • Are you investing in eternity?
  • Faith spends differently and eternally!

Luke 19:27 ESV

But as for these enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and slaughter them before me.’”

  • What a sober moment!
  • Jesus warns us in advance.
  • Those who remain enemies of God and resist His reign will have a bitter result.
  • Have you declared Jesus King?
