Hosanna – Luke 19:11-27 ESV, Colin Munroe, Lead Pastor

Hosanna!

Zechariah 9:9 ESV
Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

  • Jesus was fulfilling all the prophecies.
  • Many were still blind to His presence.
  • They imposed their will on God’s Word.
  • They rejected His reign.
  • They despised His humility.
  • They tripped over the Cornerstone of the kingdom.

Luke 19:28-31 ESV
And when he had said these things, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. 29 When he drew near to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount that is called Olivet, he sent two of the disciples, 30 saying, “Go into the village in front of you, where on entering you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever yet sat. Untie it and bring it here. 31 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ you shall say this: ‘The Lord has need of it.’”

  • Jesus had raised Lazarus here just recently.
  • Mary had anointed Jesus feet the previous night.
  • Jesus knew every detail of His future.
  • Jesus was also buried in a new tomb.
  • Everyone hoped in Messiah’s coming.
  • The owner would have been thrilled.

Matthew 21:3 ESV
If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord needs them,’ and he will send them at once.”

Luke 19:32-40 ESV
So those who were sent went away and found it just as he had told them. 33 And as they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?” 34 And they said, “The Lord has need of it.”

  • Do you think the disciples were still amazed?
  • This moment could have looked like theft.
  • Are you willing to be obedient when asked?
  • They moved and responded in faith.
  • Do you trust that God knows?

Luke 19:35-36 ESV

And they brought it to Jesus, and throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it. 36 And as he rode along, they spread their cloaks on the road.

  • This was done for royalty.

Matthew 21:8 ESV
Most of the crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road.

  • This is the origin of Palm Sunday.
  • Have you put yourself under the King of Kings?

Luke 19:37-40 ESV
As he was drawing near—already on the way down the Mount of Olives—the whole multitude of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen, 38 saying, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” 39 And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.” 40 He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.”

  • Same crowd and King different responses.
  • The Pharisees called Him teacher.
  • They declared Him King!

Matthew 21:9-11 ESV
And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!” 10 And when he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred up, saying, “Who is this?” 11 And the crowds said, “This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee.”

  • Who do you say that He is?
  • What is your declaration of Jesus?
  • How many would cry crucify on Friday morning?
  • How do you respond when Jesus our King doesn’t do thing in your way or timing?

John 12:15-19 ESV
“Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt!” 16 His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about him and had been done to him. 17 The crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to bear witness. 18 The reason why the crowd went to meet him was that they heard he had done this sign. 19 So the Pharisees said to one another, “You see that you are gaining nothing. Look, the world has gone after him.”

  • That should have been their greatest joy not sorrow.
  • We have every reason to sing songs of praise!
  • Amazing love how can it be that you my King would die for me!
