JEHOVAH – JIREH – Luke 9:10-17 ESV, Colin Munroe, Lead Pastor

Jehovah Jireh

Luke 9:10-17 (ESV)
On their return the apostles told him all that they had done. And he took them and withdrew apart to a town called Bethsaida. 11 When the crowds learned it, they followed him, and he welcomed them and spoke to them of the kingdom of God and cured those who had need of healing. 12 Now the day began to wear away, and the twelve came and said to him, “Send the crowd away to go into the surrounding villages and countryside to find lodging and get provisions, for we are here in a desolate place.” 13 But he said to them, “You give them something to eat.” They said, “We have no more than five loaves and two fish—unless we are to go and buy food for all these people.” 14 For there were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, “Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each.” 15 And they did so, and had them all sit down. 16 And taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and said a blessing over them. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd. 17 And they all ate and were satisfied. And what was left over was picked up, twelve baskets of broken pieces.

  • The only miracle that appears in all 4 gospels.
  • Jesus is sharing ministry w/ His disciples.
  • What is the disciple’s response?
  • Do we under estimate Jesus?

BIG IDEA

If we offer the Lord what we have or don’t have, He can do miraculously more than we can ask or imagine!

  • Do you think it is important to believe that we can do what He asks of us?
  • Is what He asks of us usually over our heads and more than we have or can do?
  • Are you over your head or feeling overwhelmed?
  • What does it look like to trust the Lord’s Word and obey Him in your situation?

Luke 9:10 (ESV)
On their return the apostles told him all that they had done. And he took them and withdrew apart to a town called Bethsaida.

  • Matthew’s gospel – Jesus is told of John’s death

Mark 6:31-32 (ESV)
And he said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.” For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat. 32 And they went away in the boat to a desolate place by themselves.

  • The Lord led them to rest.
  • The Spirit leads like the wind – John 3

Luke 9:11 (ESV)

When the crowds learned it, they followed him, and he welcomed them and spoke to them of the kingdom of God and cured those who had need of healing.

  • Jesus welcomed the interruption, do we?
  • Jesus welcomes the seeker / follower.
  • Jesus brought and will bring the Kingdom to us.

Mark 6:33-34 (ESV)
Now many saw them going and recognized them, and they ran there on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them. 34 When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. And he began to teach them many things.

Luke 9:12 (ESV)

Now the day began to wear away, and the twelve came and said to him, “Send the crowd away to go into the surrounding villages and countryside to find lodging and get provisions, for we are here in a desolate place.”

  • Do we pray like this? Telling God what to do?
  • When we pray do we fill God in on the details?
  • Do we make our case rather than trust His heart.
  • Logical isn’t always biblical – the disciple’s suggestion was thoughtful and compassionate, but it wasn’t the Lord’s design or desire.

Luke 9:13 (ESV)

But he said to them, “You give them something to eat.” They said, “We have no more than five loaves and two fish—unless we are to go and buy food for all these people.”

  • What will we feed them? With what?
  • We often leave God out of our math!
  • We are quick to take personal inventory and come up short.
  • The Lord never asks us to do it without Him!

Mark 6:37-38 (ESV)
But he answered them, “You give them something to eat.” And they said to him, “Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread and give it to them to eat?” 38 And he said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” And when they had found out, they said, “Five, and two fish.”

  • Give what you have to Him! As long as it’s yours it lacks supernatural potential!
  • Start 2022 by giving Him what you have and trusting Him for what you don’t have!

Prayer & Worship

Luke 9:14-15 (ESV)

For there were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, “Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each.” 15 And they did so, and had them all sit down.

  • Keep in mind that they simply did what Jesus asked having no idea what Jesus was going to do.
  • To us in hindsight it’s simply logistics, but can you imagine what the disciples and crowd thought?
  • When you are in circumstances where you have no other resource but Jesus, walk out His Word!

Luke 9:16 (ESV)

And taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and said a blessing over them. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd.

  • They obeyed His word and a miracle occurred.
  • Are you a distributor of God’s miracles?
  • Simply be willing to share what God has given you

Luke 9:17 (ESV)

And they all ate and were satisfied. And what was left over was picked up, twelve baskets of broken pieces.

  • It’s not like they ate a scrap of bread, they all ate and were satisfied!
  • Jesus provided in abundance!
  • Why 12 baskets full – He fills our cups and hearts when we serve!

John 4:32 (ESV)
But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.”
