Jesus is the Light
John 1:6-13 ESV

Big Idea:  Jesus is the Light

Main Points

1.            The witness to the light V6-8
2.            The identity of the light v9
3.            The rejection of the light v10-11
4.            The power of the light v12-13

1.   Witness to the Light v6 -8

V6 “There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.”
V7 “He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him.”
V8 “He was NOT the light but came to bear witness about the light.”

–      “Jehovah is a gracious giver”

–      Who was John?  He was NOT the author of the book, for whom the book was named.  The book is named for the author who was one of the apostles in the inner circle of Jesus.

–      He was the final prophet in the style of the old testament and was clothed with camels skin and lived in the wilderness eating locusts and wild honey.

–      Isaiah 40:3

–      Luke 1:

–      This matches the description of Elijah in 1 Kings 1:8

–      When he came, he was the only witness to the Messiah

–      He spoke of repentance and he fulfilled the prophecy of making the people ready for the Messiah

–      Notice that his message is SIMPLE.  Repentance. The kingdom of heaven is at hand, and Behold, the lamb who takes away the sin of the world.

–      Nothing about the nature of the Messiah or about politics in general.

–      Sometimes we try and advance our ideas and agenda, almost like we are the light

–      “1 Cor 1:17 “For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not with words of eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.”

  • 1 Cor 2:1 “And I, when I came to you, brothers, did not come proclaiming to you the testimony of God with lofty speech or wisdom.2 For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. 3 And I was with you in weakness and in fear and much trembling, 4 and my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, 5 so that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.”

–      It starts with Godly intent, but it ends in being self obsessed with success and we end up anxious and resentful of others, as would have happened with John

–      But he didn’t and we shouldn’t.  Follow Christ’s example:

–      John 12:49 “For I have not spoken on my own authority, but the Father who sent me has himself given me a commandment—what to say and what to speak.”

–      We empty the cross of its power when we are focused on self.

–      The comfort is that we have our own story

–      We don’t’ have to be fancy.  Like a sign post.

2.   Identity of the Light v9

V9  “The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.”

–      Jesus was the light?  What does that mean? Spiritual illumination

–      Psalm 119:105 “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.”

–      1 John 1:7 “7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.”

–      John 1:29 Lamb of God

–     Physically blind, people can’t see things.  SPIRITUALLY blind we don’t see spiritual things, namely, the purpose of life, what happens when we die and so on.

–      To the Jew, that Gentiles can be saved. Eph 3: 3-6 “For this reason I, Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus on behalf of you Gentiles— 2 assuming that you have heard of the stewardship of God’s grace that was given to me for you, 3 how the mystery was made known to me by revelation, as I have written briefly. 4 When you read this, you can perceive my insight into the mystery of Christ, 5 which was not made known to the sons of men in other generations as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit. 6 This mystery is[a] that the Gentiles are fellow heirs, members of the same body, and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.”

–    He also brought light to the nature of the Church, the nature of the New Birth, and the nature of the in dwelling of the Holy Spirit.

–    Most of all, He brought His presence, and the way of salvation, “I am the way the truth and the life, no man comes to the father but by me.” John 14:6

–   Heb 1:2 – 3 “2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world.3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,”

–   Col 1:15 “15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.”

3.   The Rejection of the Light v10 – 11

V10 “He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him.”

-His own did not receive him despite hundreds of years of prophecy

-They did not receive Him in the Temple, they did not receive Him in Nazareth -(Mark 6:1-6), and they did not receive Him in His own family Mark 3 “21 And when his family heard it, they went out to seize him, for they were saying, “He is out of his mind.” … “31 And his mother and his brothers came, and standing outside they sent to him and called him. 32 And a crowd was sitting around him, and they said to him, “Your mother and your brothers[c] are outside, seeking you.” 33 And he answered them, “Who are my mother and my brothers?” 34 And looking about at those who sat around him, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! 35 For whoever does the will of God, he is my brother and sister and mother.”

-If you ever feel like people aren’t taking you very seriously, remember that you are in good company.

V11 “He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him.”

– God looked down from heaven and saw that we needed help and decided to come down Himself and help us.

– He did come to us, and we murdered Him.

– The government of the world murdered Him, and by extension, we all murdered Him.

–   If we murdered the incarnate God, it is no surprise that the Bible indicates that we were born spiritually children of the devil

–    John 3:10 “By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother.”

–    It doesn’t take much observational power to look a the world and see that something is wrong.  Killing, hating, raping, starvation, wars, and so on…

–     We are a fallen race who’s NATURE is sinful rebellion and something that God hates.

4.   The Power of the Light v12-13

V12 and V13 “But to all who did receive him, who believe in His name, He gave the right to become children of God, 13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor the will of man, but of God.”

–      All who received him.  He made a way for us to RECEIVE Him.

–      How do we receive Him?  Belief in His name, not an intellectual thing, not an emotional thing, but a Spiritual thing.  It is putting one’s own total confidence on Christ’s work on the cross for salvation as you cry out to him for mercy.  You don’t just need the Gospel, the demons believe and tremble (James 2:19)

–      “Right” – Exousia – we are now legally adopted in the eyes of the court room of heaven

–      NOT our RACE, not our strength, not our idea, but all of God – all his idea.  Our idea was fig leaves in the garden.

–      None of the patriarchs thought of, or asked for a savior that would take away our sins.

–      We did not think of this idea by our own intelligence.

–      Don’t look to yourself, but to Him.

–    We did not earn this Eph 2:8-9 “8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”

–     There will always be a tendency for us to look to ourselves in some way.  Trying to change our behavior to be saved or trying to get Bible smart and say and do the right things to be saved.  Sometimes that can be a good thing if you see how bad you fail. Just turn to Jesus.

–      Remember, the power of the light is SO STRONG that it can take people like that, and make them children of God.

Final Application:

In summary

1.   The witness to the light V6-8 (John was the witness, so are we)

2.   The identity of the light v9 (Jesus is the Light)

3.   The rejection of the light v10-11 (We have rejected him as the human race)

4.   The power of the light v12-13 (Jesus has the power to save us through His death and resurrection)

1.  Witness:  Don’t be afraid to be a witness.  The simple truth is what the world needs.  We are already told that broad is the path that leads to distruction, so don’t blame yourself when people reject.  Just tell them what you found in Jesus.

2.  Jesus is the Light!  Not social activism and solving problems, and answers from the world.  You are the blessed one, not the person who seems like they are happy, have it all together, and have tremendous success.

3.   Rejection of the Light:  We live in a world that has rejected Christ.  What does that mean? Doesn’t it mean that they will reject us too?  Jesus said that Matt 10:25 “25 It is enough for the disciple to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign[a] those of his household.”  If they rejected Christ and you are following Him then they will reject you too!

4.   The Power of the Light.  Don’t be discouraged, the word of God is quick and powerful and sharper than any two edged sword Heb 4:12.  If God has purposed to use you in someone else’s life, then He WILL use you Eph 2:10 “10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”  We are destined for good works and no one can stop God’s purpose. He is utterly in control and will use you exactly how HE intends to, no matter how weak or persecuted you feel.
