Knowing Him
1 John 5:21

Knowing that you Know Him
1 John 5:13-21

Big Idea:
God wants us to have confidence about our relationship with Him.  This confidence comes through the knowledge He has given us.

Introduction

  1. Help us learn what it means to love
    • 1 John 3:16- “By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers.
      • He takes us to school on what receiving and reflecting God’s love looks like!
  1. Clarify what it means to follow Jesus: He wants to give clear indicators and test to reveal who is walking in a genuine faith.
    • Social-Are you loving others? The church?
      • 1 John 2:10-11 “10 Whoever loves his brother abides in the light, and in him there is no cause for stumbling. 11 But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.
    • Moral- Are you walking in the light as Jesus is in the light?
      • 1 John 1:6-If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth
    • Doctrinal-What do you believe about Jesus?
      • 1 John 4:2-3 “By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God.
        • Fully God-Fully Man-Propitiation for our sins.
  1. Bring Encouragement and Assurance
    • Gospel of John’s purpose: John 20:31- “31 but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
      • To have a full and complete joy. 1 John 1:4 “And we are writing these things so that our  joy may be complete.”
      • To promote holiness. 1 John 2:1 “My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin.”
      • To protect from False Teachers. 1 John 2:26” I write these things to you about those who are trying to deceive you.”
      • To assure them of their salvation. 1 John 5:13-“I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life.”
        • Present Posture of Faith and Repentance….not simply a past prayer or decision.

1 John 5:13-21

13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life. 14 And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him.

16 If anyone sees his brother committing a sin not leading to death, he shall ask, and God[a] will give him life—to those who commit sins that do not lead to death. There is sin that leads to death; I do not say that one should pray for that. 17 All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin that does not lead to death.

18 We know that everyone who has been born of God does not keep on sinning, but he who was born of God protects him, and the evil one does not touch him.

19 We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.

20 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. 21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols.

Big Idea:

God wants us to have confidence about our relationship with Him. This confidence comes through the knowledge He has given us.

Passage Outline:

We can know:

  1. We have Eternal Life (13)
  2. That God answers Prayer (14-17)
  3. Victory over Sin (18)
  4. We belong to God (19)
  5. Him who is True (20-21)

Knowing that: We have Eternal Life (13)

13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life.

  • Believing in the Name: Expensive Restaurant/Hotel in the name of so and so…..You’re relaying upon their credit to pay
  • Knowing: Insecurity…looking for all the wrong places to be accepted! Knowing brings confidence, security, grounding….Identity!
    • Christianity different than every other religion! Grace & Acceptance precede change and behavior. God accepts us and this leads to sinning no more (John 8).
  • Have Eternal Life: A gift that changes everything, your whole perspective.

We can know: That God Answers Prayer (14-17)

14 And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him.16 If anyone sees his brother committing a sin not leading to death, he shall ask, and God[a] will give him life—to those who commit sins that do not lead to death. There is sin that leads to death; I do not say that one should pray for that. 17 All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin that does not lead to death.

  • Do you have confidence in payer?
  • Asking according to His will?
    • Prayer of discernment and guidance……
  • Confidence in God answering prayer
    • 4 ways: Immediate Yes, No, Delay Answer, or Answer Differently than asked
    • Peter released from Prison (Yes), Paul going to Asia (No), Mary & Martha prayed for Jesus to heal Lazarus (Delayed), Paul with thorn in flesh…added sufficient grace (Answered differently-knew what he needed).
      • “Prayer is not overcoming God’s reluctance. It is laying hold of His willingness” (quoted in Be Real, 179). Therefore nothing we ask for lies beyond the power of God except that which lies beyond His will, His purpose, His plan.
  • What is John talking about with praying for a brother committing sin?
    • Pray don’t gossip!
    • Actually pray, you help in the restoration process.
      • Not commanding us not to prayer, but saying they won’t be effective…..
      • Who? What? Why?  -Brother? -Life & Death (Physical or Spiritual)?
        • Heinous Sin: Murder, Rape….No, many committed these.
        • Apostacy-Hardened heart against God (teaching that true believers can’t apostatize!)
        • Unpardonable Sin: Blasphemy against Spirit
        • God’s Discipline of a believer unrepentant in sin: Ananias & Saphira, Taking the Lord’s Supper (1 Cor.11)….
          • Most likely John is not talking about a specific sin but has to do with ongoing, willful sin that remains unconfessed to the point that God takes drastic action.”

We can know: Victory over Sin (18)

18 We know that everyone who has been born of God does not keep on sinning, but he who was born of God protects him, and the evil one does not touch him.

  • New Birth leads to new beliefs and lifestyle
    • 2 Cor. 5:17- 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.[a] The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
    • C.S.Lewis-“God became man to turn creatures into sons: not simply to produce better men of the old kind but to produce a new kind of man. It is not like teaching a horse to jump better and better but like turning a horse into a winged creature.”
      • Changes the desires of our heart, no longer a hunger for sin. Instead of pleasurable it seems horrid and disgusting. Seems like the dullest and most empty thing imaginable.
  • The Protection from the Son of God
    • John 10:14-15-“ 14 I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep.
      • From the Evil One-touch means to lay hold of…can’t harm us spiritually.

We can know: We belong to God (19)

19 We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.

  • Another reminder of our security: Image of belonging. Origin, Welcome, Care, Protection, Warmth, Known
    • Family

We can know: Him who is True/Real (20-21)

20 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. 21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols.

  • Jesus comes to give understanding to those who will humble themselves to receive it.
    • This understanding is intended to facilitate a relationship.
  • Truth vs. Deception/ Illusion
    • Jesus doesn’t just give truth….He is the truth/Reality. (3 times true is used).
  • Keep yourselves from Idols-God protects us but we also must be wise! Idolatry is putting anything before God, even good things.

Application:

  • Assurance is found in a present posture of faith and repentance not simply a past prayer! We can and God wants you to know you are His!
  • What is God calling you to pray for with greater confidence and expectancy?
  • Are you experiencing freedom and overcoming sin? How is God wanting to set you free?
