Mark 2:27  “And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath:”

Stimulation: What have you created from nothing? God did and when He had finished He rested on the 7th day. The natural man fights against God and His plan for them.

Lesson Text Luke 6: 1-16 ESV
On a Sabbath, while he was going through the grainfields, his disciples plucked and ate some heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands. 2  But some of the Pharisees said, “Why are you doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath?” 3  And Jesus answered them, “Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: 4  how he entered the house of God and took and ate the bread of the Presence, which is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those with him?”5 And he said to them, “The Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath.”

   6  On another Sabbath, he entered the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was withered.7  And the scribes and the Pharisees watched him, to see whether he would heal on the Sabbath, so that they might find a reason to accuse him.

8  But he knew their thoughts, and he said to the man with the withered hand, “Come and stand here.” And he rose and stood there. 9  And Jesus said to them, “I ask you, is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to destroy it?”10  And after looking around at them all he said to him, “Stretch out your hand.” And he did so, and his hand was restored. 11  But they were filled with fury and discussed with one another what they might do to Jesus.

   12   In these days he went out to the mountain to pray, and all night he continued in prayer to God.13  And when day came, he called his disciples and chose from them twelve, whom he named apostles:14  Simon, whom he named Peter, and Andrew his brother, and James and John, and Philip, and Bartholomew,15  and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon who was called the Zealot,16  and Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.”

Jesus’ conflict was not with scripture but understanding and interpretation by man. (rabbis)

The Sabbath in the NT. (Many Sabbaths other than the 7th day.)

  1. The Jewish Sabbath. NT with Jewish usage; the sabbath is, to sabbaton.
    1. Observance from Jewish sources(After Tabernacle>Temple/captivity)
      1.  the body of Jesus is buried prior to the sabbath, {#Mr 15:42ff.}
      2. plucking of grain is forbidden, {#Mr 2:23-24}
      3.  those not in danger of death are not to be helped or healed, #Mr 3:1
      4. objects are not to be carried, {#Joh 5:9-10}
      5. travel is restricted, {#Ac 1:12} priestly work{#Mt 12:4-5} the sabbath is a day of rest, {#Lu 23:56} guests are invited, {#Lu 14:1} Scripture is read, {#Ac 13:15,27} worship is held in the synagogue, {#Lu 4:16ff.} .

a. The Gospel Stories. In #Mr 2; 3 conflict arises between Jesus and the Pharisees over the plucking of grain on the sabbath. {#Mr 2:23ff.} Jesus shows from the OT that on occasion the righteous may infringe sabbath rules. In principle human needs are more important than the sabbath. {#Mr 2:27} Jesus as Lord decides when the sabbath applies and when it is to be transcended. {#Mr 2:28} #Mt 12:1ff. adds that the sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath:28  Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.

Rabbinical false notions: it was reaping, threshing, winnowing, and preparing food all at once”  Man’s teaching over the Word of God. All efforts to coerce and control the actions of others, not to serve God but man’s machinations.  Jesus is LORD of the Sabbath!
Point: God’s priorities

Jesus used King David and reason to show the meeting of physical needs and keeping the Sabbath are not mutually exclusive.

Man’s traditions are not precedent over God’s Word. God wants our hearts as His!

Hebrews 1:1,2 ESV   Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, 2  but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all.”
