THE LAMP, THE LIGHT, AND THE STAND – Luke 8:16-18 ESV, John Hempstead, Teaching Team

Before we envelope the verses before us, there is an understanding that these verses are a continuation of the Parable of The Sower.  With this in mind, let’s take a brief overview of this parable before examining the epilogue that is presented in these verses.

First, there’s the point of interest…

John Nolland stated, “The Gospel of Luke is a major repository of the parables of Jesus.”

Second, there’s the place of interest…

This parable was present from a boat…  Matthew 13:1-3

Third, there’s the parable seed and the soil…

In Luke 8:11 we see the Seed = Word of God

In Luke 8:15 we see that the Soil = the human heart

Fourth, there’s the connection…  Hear or hearing

Revelation 2:7, 11, 17, 29; 3:6, 13, 22; Romans 10:13-15; Isaiah 52:7

  1. The Lamp, The Light and The Stand   Luke 8:16

The Lamp: Psalm 119:105; John 1:1

The Light: 2 Samuel 22:29; John 8:12; Proverbs 20:27

The Stand: The stand is a picture for us, to be the stand that lifts up the living Word. We are the stand, that holds up the light of Christ in a darken world.  So how do we hold up the light that Jesus Christ gives us in this darken world?  Tommy Hunt sheds some light on this, “Share the gospel at all times and when necessary, use words.”

  1. The Hidden & The Secret Coming to Light   Luke 8:17

The Hidden: It is here we come to see the real purpose of the Lighted Lamp: it’s about exposure. When the Word of God gains entrance into our soul, it becomes the flashlight of our soul.  1 Corinthians 4:5; Romans 2:16; Luke 12:2; Matthew 10:26

The hidden things will be revealed sooner or later, why not get rid of them now?

The Secret: Psalm 19:12; Romans 2:16

The same ending as the hidden things, Sooner or later the secret things will be revealed!

It’s been said, “With eyes wide shut we entertain the possibilities SECRETLY.”

  1. The Listener & The Whosoever’s   Luke 8:18

The Listener: The listener is to “take care how you hear.”  The listener is me, you and anyone that hears.  For all that hear are responsible for what they do with what they hear.  We don’t come to God with our parents, because God has no grandchildren.

The Whosoever:  There are the whosoever’s that have the Word of God and live by it.  Then there are the whosoever’s that think they have something.  But does that person actually have something or not?  This whosoever loses whatever they thought was something, but in the long run was nothing.

Closing Thoughts:

Let us be watchmen over our hearts   Isaiah 62:6

Let us stand in the gap for one another   Ezekiel 22:30

Let us stir up the gift that is within us   2 Timothy 1:6 ; 2 Peter 1:13

Let us stoke the coals of the heart   Jeremiah 20:9

Let us Pray on a continual basis   1 Thessalonians 5:17

Let us draw nearer to God everyday   Hebrews 10:22
