Dealing with Danger – Luke 13:31-35 ESV, Colin Munroe, Lead Pastor

Dealing with Danger

Luke 13:31-35 (ESV)
At that very hour some Pharisees came and said to him, “Get away from here, for Herod wants to kill you.” 32 And he said to them, “Go and tell that fox, ‘Behold, I cast out demons and perform cures today and tomorrow, and the third day I finish my course. 33 Nevertheless, I must go on my way today and tomorrow and the day following, for it cannot be that a prophet should perish away from Jerusalem.’ 34 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing! 35 Behold, your house is forsaken. And I tell you, you will not see me until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!’”

Luke 13:31 (ESV)
At that very hour some Pharisees came and said to him, “Get away from here, for Herod wants to kill you.”

  • This is Herod Antipas the son of Herod the Great

Luke 9:7-9
Now Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was happening, and he was perplexed, because it was said by some that John had been raised from the dead, 8 by some that Elijah had appeared, and by others that one of the prophets of old had risen. 9 Herod said, “John I beheaded, but who is this about whom I hear such things?” And he sought to see him.

  • Now Herod wants to kill Him?
  • Jesus seemed steadfast and focused.
  • This is a dangerous man with means.
  • How do you respond to danger?
  • He trusted our Father’s plan!
  • He walked the path laid before Him.

John 7:30 (ESV)
So they were seeking to arrest him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come.

John 8:20 (ESV)
These words he spoke in the treasury, as he taught in the temple; but no one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come.

  • Do you trust God for His perfect timing and protection?
  • God had predetermined Jesus appointed time.
  • Ironically His enemies aided God’s plan.

Acts 2:22-24
“Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know— 23 this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. 24 God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it.

Luke 13:32 (ESV)

And he said to them, “Go and tell that fox, ‘Behold, I cast out demons and perform cures today and tomorrow, and the third day I finish my course.

  • Foxes are cunning and crafty.
  • Jesus was saying that He would finish His mission

Luke 13:33 (ESV)

Nevertheless, I must go on my way today and tomorrow and the day following, for it cannot be that a prophet should perish away from Jerusalem.’

Luke 13:34 (ESV)

O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!

  • Jesus wanted to bring them under His care.
  • Not willing?

Luke 13:35 (ESV)

Behold, your house is forsaken. And I tell you, you will not see me until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!’”

  • Forsaken through rejection.
