The Purpose of Christ Appearance

1 John 3:4-10

Big Idea:

Jesus appeared to rescue us. Our lives reveal our Spiritual Identity!

Review:

  • God as Light & Love
    • The Miracle and Mystery of God making us children
    • Why is Jesus returning?
  • Today asking Why did Jesus come? What was so serious that the Incarnation was necessary?
    • (1) fully assured Christians; (2) Christians struggling with assurance; (3) falsely assured non-Christians; and (4) known non-Christians (unpublished sermon notes). These verses are, of course, for all of us. But John especially has the third group in his sights here. His goal is to shock them and wake them up to their true spiritual status.

1 John 3:4-10

Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness. You know that he appeared in order to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him. Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous. Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil. No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God’s seed abides in him; and he cannot keep on sinning, because he has been born of God. 10 By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother.

Jesus appeared to take away sin (4-6)

  1. Nature of Sin: Lawlessness
    1. Everyone must answer what is wrong with this world?
    2. What is wrong with you? Being honest with yourself.
      1. “I know and always do what is right”-Don’t know yourself and own heart
        1. Sermon on Mount
      2. Nature of Sin is Lawlessness. It’s an inward treason against God. We naturally know and learn of God’s law but rebel against it.
  2. Incarnation is most humbling and rejoicing truth
    1. It says you’re so hopelessly broken, so beyond repair that nothing except the Son of God coming down could save you.
      1. The realization we can save ourselves. We can make ourselves into the moral and perfect people.
    2. It’s rejoicing because we see that God has done what we never could, by clothing himself with Humanity and dying upon the cross he has done what we never could.
      1. Jesus takes away sin by placing it upon himself
        1. John 1:29, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!”….
      1. Jesus takes away sin by changing us from the inside out.
        1. Ezekiel 36:26, “26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.
          1. John Q Movie
  1. Jesus is the only one qualified to save us
      1. In Him there is no sin.
      2. 2 Corinthians 5:21-For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

Jesus appeared to destroy the work of the Devil (7-8)

  1. Origin of Devil- From the Beginning
    1. Isaiah 14:12-14- “How you have fallen from heaven, [a]star of the morning, son of the dawn! You have been cut down to the earth, You who have weakened the nations! 13 “But you said in your heart, ‘I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God, And I will sit on the mount of assembly In the recesses of the north. 14 ‘I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.’
  2. Nature
    1. Deceiver-Sirens of Greek Mythology (Draw in by beauty but deceptive, intended to destroy)
    2. Accuser- Uses the law to condemn God’s people.
  3. Jesus came to destroy Devil’s work.
    1. Col. 1:13-14-13 He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
    2. Hebrews 2:14 -Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil,

Jesus appeared to set apart God’s children (9-10)

  1. Intimidating Passage
    1. Vs.6 & 9- Christians don’t sin…..What does this mean?
      1. Present Continuous Action- Life-Style and Habit of Sin

Not able to Sin:

  • 1 John 2:3 – “By this we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commandments.” Keeping the commandments is one means of our assurance.
  • 1 John 3:6 – “No one who abides in Him sins; no one who sins has seen Him or knows Him.” And again in 3:9 – “No one who is born of God practices sin, because His seed abides in him; and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.” Same thing again in 5:18 – “We know that no one who is born of God sins.

Able to Sin

1 John 1:8-10 – “If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and His word is not in us

Romans 7:21-23-“ 21 So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand. 22 For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being, 23 but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members”

Wake up people who think they’re Christians but aren’t! Either of you’re the Devil or of God the Father.

  • Must be born again-God’s seed comes and changes us (Spiritual Heritage shows itself in our lives….Who’s our Daddy?)
    • Illustration of a seed and how it works. Have you trusted in Christ?

Application

Doing Good-While loving others (Grace & Truth)…..a humble and gracious holiness is what Christ’s seed in us produces…..a God seed. (Not Religion or Irreligion—-The Gospel!).

  1. Challenge- Area’s of longstanding sin God wants you to repent of.
    1. Are you a follower of Christ?
  2. Encouragement- God’s seed in you will change your life! You don’t save yourself but instead trust wholly upon Christ to rescue you.
