THE SPIRIT OF TRUTH – John 14:15-24 ESV, Colin Munroe, Lead Pastor

The Spirit of Truth

John 14:15-24 ESV
“If you love me, you will keep my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. 18 “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19 Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20 In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. 21 Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.” 22 Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?” 23 Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. 24 Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father’s who sent me.

John 14:15 ESV
“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.

  • We don’t keep is commandments to earn His love.

Romans 8:35 ESV
Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword?

Romans 8:37-39 ESV
No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

John 14:15 ESV
“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.

  • If we don’t’ earn His love by keeping His commandments what is Jesus saying here?
  • Loving Jesus moves us to joyful obedience!
  • So the focus and objective is to love Him!
  • Genuine and joyful obedience demonstrate our love for Jesus.
  • It is less of a focus on obedience and more on love.
  • So we love God when we love others!
  • And we love others because we love God!

John 14:24 ESV
Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father’s who sent me.

  • So love for Jesus manifests itself in obedience.
  • It changes how we pray.
  • Do you think the Lord will answer that prayer?

John 14:16 ESV

And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever,

  • The Father answers all of Jesus’ prayers.
  • Another Helper besides Jesus.
  • He helps us fulfill God’s purpose.
    • The Great Commission.
    • Power to realize obedience.
    • Comfort, counsel and conviction.
    • Conforms us to His image.
    • Guidance, reminds us who’s we are.
    • Helps us live loved and live love!
    • Helps us understand and live God’s Word!

John 14:17 ESV

even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.

John 14:18 ESV

“I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.

John 14:19 ESV

Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live.

1 Corinthians 15:20-23 ESV
But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21 For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. 22 For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. 23 But each in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, then at his coming those who belong to Christ.

John 11:25-29 ESV
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?”

John 14:20 ESV

In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you.

John 2:22 ESV
When therefore he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed the Scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.

John 14:21 ESV

Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.”

  • Again, keeping His commandments demonstrate our love for Him.
  • Those who love Jesus, evidenced by obedience, will be loved by the Father and the Son.
  • Jesus will show Himself to those who love Him.

John 14:22 ESV

Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?”

  • That will be our mission!
  • As we love Him through obedience He continually reveals Himself to us and we are transformed!

1 John 3:2 ESV
Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is.

John 14:23-24 ESV

Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. 24 Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father’s who sent me.

  • Here Jesus adds that God will make His home in us!
  • We are the Temple of the Holy Spirit.
  • God’s Kingdom on earth!
